During this phase, there is a timer, and if time runs out, the ship will explode, and Splat Tim has to restart the level. When the boss takes enough damage, he will jump onto his throne, press a red button (which causes the ship to enter "Self Destruct" mode), and then jump into a giant metal sphere. In his first phase, he will jump around the arena (If Splat Tim gets hit by this, he will take 20 damage), sometimes also firing big bullets at Splat Tim ( These are hard to dodge, and they deal 5 damage). The final boss is the leader of the Squidoids, the Dinktator. The third boss will fly around the arena, dropping bombs (which deal 30 damage and also explode on contact) and occasionally swooping down to try and hit Splat Tim (This will deal 50 damage, and the amount of damage will rise depending on the boss's health bar.). The second boss will shoot homing missiles at Splat Tim (The homing missiles will deal 20 damage they will explode if they are shot 5 times), and if Splat Tim gets too close to it, it will jump to the other side of the arena. It's attacks will be different depending on the world you're in the boss in the first world will slowly walk towards Splat Tim, smacking him with it's tentacle (this attack deals 25 damage if he gets too close. The first world takes place in Tim's hometown, the second takes place in a forest, the third going up a hill and the last taking place in the alien mothership.Įvery boss (Except for the final boss) is a robot that resembles an octopus. There are 4 worlds for Splat Tim to venture through, with each one having 3 levels, with the 2nd level being a boss fight, and the 3rd level being a bonus level(except for the final world, which is unlocked for collecting every hidden key piece in each level of a world. A single Heart Shard is obtained for beating a boss. Splat Tim's health starts out at 100 HP, with 50 HP being added for every Heart Shard collected. The game plays like a combination between a shooter and a platformer, with Splat Tim having to traverse the level while also shooting at enemies. Armed with a paint gun, Tim (Who is now Splat Tim) must go off and save his town. Upon touching it, it fuses with Tim, who becomes Splat Tim (The design is very different compared to modern Splat Tim he resembles a regular inkling now). Tim manages to escape capture, while also finding a strange artifact which fell out of the alien mothership. But, all of a sudden, some evil aliens that resemble squids ( which are named "Squidoids", according to the game's manual ) invade the town and kidnap all of it's residents. Splat Tim (Who is simply called "Tim" during the first cutscene) is a normal boy who lives in a normal town. The plot of the original Splat Tim is completely kid-friendly, since the reboot had to be "dark and edgy" so that it would appeal to modern gamers. ![]()

Because there are rankings with clear winners and losers which implies some people are performing better than others and are judged as such.īut what about individual activities with no competition? For most people to consider something like that a game, they would still require external judgement about performance. Why? It's because official competition, even involving things not normally considered games, is seen as a game. But, if there were a contest set up where multiple artists competed to paint the best picture, many people would say that is a game. Most people would say that an artist painting a picture is not playing a game, even if they are having fun doing it. ![]() The question really comes down to whether or not pure creativity is a game. I'm sure it's because the natural feeling learning curve for gamers (not necessarily programmers) is building on really simple pieces, like "add 2 numbers, ok move things, now check out storage, ok now check out control directives" sounds a lot like assembly, no? I loved the ever loving shit out of Opus Magnum (especially after figuring out the undocumented keyboard shortcuts).Īlso as an aside, it feels like most if not all programming games feel more like assembly than high level languages. The cost/efficiency histograms in all of his games are brilliant for worming into programmer brains. I didn't have time to watch the video, so maybe you already mentioned them. OP I'm sure you're aware of them as they are some of the most popular programming games, but you really need to check out the Zachtronics games. I had a weird experience with TIS where the anti-optimization achievement for the first puzzle led me to spend several hours across a couple sessions getting it to run slower than the age of the universe, and then immediately lost interest in the game. But something about seeing other people jump so far outside the mental box that I had placed around what I thought was possible in programming has made it easier for me to jump outside the box in different ways myself. No, I'm not implementing TIS-100-derived parallelism in real code. I had half-expected to see some sort of cheesing or cheating, but nope, these people were just way more clever than I was.Īnd interestingly, that led to a big jump in my real programming skill. And in retrospect, it makes sense - the opcodes include certain instructions like "ANY" or "LAST" that hint at parallelism - but I never would have thought to go down that route on my own. my 1 simultaneous solution = a cubic difference. So then, it's obvious - 3 simultaneous solutions vs. These people were finding ways to compute solutions in parallel, sometimes three layers at a time, yet still managing to synchronize the output appropriately. The craziness came in something I never would have thought was possible. Sure, there were some non-obvious improvements that came from things like algebraic equivalences - clever ways to compute certain expressions more efficiently - but these I expected to see, and would have accounted for "constant factor" improvements over my solutions. So I looked up some of the top solutions and had my mind blown. Then I'd run the code and see just how many cycles away I was from the best - not only slower, but polynomially slower. So I got to the point where I would find a solution, then come back to it, tweak it a bit, improve the efficiency, and feel like, okay, this is probably pretty close to the ceiling - maybe not the best, but within a constant factor of the best, surely. I was approaching the game mostly to just get to a solution for each puzzle the architecture is different enough from what we use in the real world to make even finding a naive solution sometimes difficult for me.īut eventually the little "scoreboards" they give you after each solution tripped my efficiency fuse. (Minor puzzle-solving spoilers for TIS ahead.)
![]() ![]() ![]() The body horror of the book is largely intuited, and that makes it all the more ferocious, yet the use of sickness as a proxy for family works well. Cross could have been anyone, she was anyone, and Petrella’s life unraveled with just the smallest tug of a string. In the world of largely anonymous internet relationship building we are only what we say we are, and that allows for the people who bear witness to our presentation to fill the gaps. Likewise, we know so little about Cross that it is debatable if she is the person she says or if this is anything other than some type of cruel performance. Within just a couple of exchanges, Petrella commits to a very extreme S&M relationship with Cross, even professing a life-devouring love and devotion, and they have never met. This actually presents one of the only challenges to the narrative: it takes a leap of faith for the reader to believe that each character’s radicalization is possible. Because it is entirely built on dialogue of a type, it has the feeling of a stage play, except with two characters who never share the same space. The book is exceedingly short, I read it in one sitting in less than an hour and a half. In the conversations, particularly the emails, Petrella’s language becomes a sort of vulgar dance, she dives so completely into the excursions commanded by Cross that the reader wonders how much about this is related to the relationship and how much it is simply an opportunity for Petrella to give in to her own detached mania. Petrella goes back and forth on Cross’ provocations, but in the end, it is Petrella’s obsession that consumes both characters. To protect the plot we should leave the later events to the reader, but suffice it to say that the demands turn both violent and immolating. These sexualized displays, including several that eventually lead to Petrella losing her job, give her a rush, but it escalates from there. Petrella submits to this masochistic position quickly without ever meeting Cross, performing small flourishes that Cross demands. That means bank accounts, all behavior, even when, and what, her ward eats. Petrella’s vulnerabilities are seen quickly by Cross who unveils her true dream: to have totalizing control over another person. This is told through a series of emails and instant messages, a structure familiar to readers of horror writers like John Langhan or Gemma Files. Agnes is floored and they begin a correspondence that quickly leans romantic. She gets contacted by Zoe Cross who is interested in buying the item, but when she discovers Anges’ financial situation, she simply transfers her a bulk of money. Its success is precisely on its willingness to take something simple past where it would make sense, and into the realm of the irrational where consequences never seem to line up with caution.Īgnes Petrella posts on a queer forum trying to sell a family heirloom to make rent. This irrationality is at the heart of Eric LaRocca’s new novella Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, a story that spotlights a tiny fissure of discomfort about the seeming intimacy of our many anonymous online interactions and breaks it open as widely as possible. The normal tools won’t apply, and certainly won’t keep us safe. Something exists that does not play by the rules of the rest of our life. But there’s always some part of what we fear that lies beyond our rational reach. Usually, to grapple with these things, we try to make sense out of them. Our life is filled with frightening things: lost lives, mysteries of nature, fear of death, as well as the more mundane. There is a version of horror literature founded on taking the rationally frightening to the point of irrationality. ![]() ![]()

One way they do this is by arching their backs so they can look around and see more of the action. Tummy timeĪs your baby gets used to tummy time, they’ll realize that they now have another viewpoint of the world, and start exploring. This typically lasts until they’re between two and four months old. Startle reflexĪlso known as the Moro reflex, babies may arch their backs when they’re startled. It’s common and completely normal for babies to have some form of acid reflux, and arching their backs is one of the trademark signs - especially if they do it while they’re sleeping. If your baby arches their back while crying for what seems like endless periods of time for no obvious reason, it could be a sign of colic. They might do this after feeding, when trying to poop, or while lying down (same, tbh). It could help them feel more comfortable by stretching out their stomachs and tiny digestive systems. If your infant is feeling a little gassy or has an upset stomach, sometimes they’ll arch their backs. No, your baby is not gaslighting you with mixed messages it’s just one of their only communication options at the beginning. But, it can also mean that they’re tired, hungry, or want to be held. It can also be an early version of a temper tantrum. Maybe they don’t want to be held or fed at a particular moment, so they put their unusually strong back muscles to work and let you know that they’re not into it. It may look dramatic, but it’s also a common way for babies to communicate. It’s one thing for a baby to be squirmy, but it’s another when they arch their back with all their might and look like they’re in distress. ![]() Here are some of the reasons why your baby is arching their back. ![]() And whether your baby is arching their back when they’re crying, lying down, sleeping, or being held, each can provide clues as to what they’re trying to tell us about their needs, mood, or discomfort. Possible causes of back arching in babiesįrom the time they’re newborns, infants are pretty good at arching their backs - as if they were doing months of in-utero yoga (which may be what it felt like). Here’s what to know about babies arching their backs, including why it happens, what to do, and when to worry. In some cases, though, it can signal a more serious health condition. The good news is it’s nothing to worry about most of the time, and it’s another example of how we can learn more about a baby’s needs based on how they move their body. But when they start to do things like arch their backs - especially while crying, sleeping, or being held - it’s natural to worry. Sure, it’s easy to be calm when your baby is napping away peacefully, or cooing contently as they’re being held. For parents, particularly first-timers who may not be fluent in baby body language, there can be a bit of an adjustment period. And this means using a variety of different - sometimes disturbing - types of movements and body language. Parents view this symptom as a problem more often than medical intervention is given. Before they get to the point of talking to tell us what they need, babies have to get creative when it comes to communicating with us.
